Rochona Majumdar is Professor in the departments of South Asian Languages and Civilizations and Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago. Her publications include Art Cinema and India's Forgotten Futures: Film and History in the Postcolony (2021), Writing Postcolonial History (2010), Marriage and Modernity: Family Values in Colonial Bengal (2009) and articles in numerous edited collections and journals.

Calcutta 71: Critical Cinephilia and Mrinal Sen
The success of his film Calcutta 71 (1972), remarked director Mrinal Sen, was not due to “cinematic excellence,” but “more because of the time in which it was made and released.”[1] Sen was right. Calcutta 71 did not reap profits in the box office.
