Monika Kaup is Professor of English and Adjunct Professor of Comparative Literature and Media at the University of Washington. She is the author of Neobaroque in the Americas: Alternative Modernities in Literature, Visual Art, and Film (University of Virginia Press, 2012) and Baroque New Worlds: Representation, Transculturation, Counterconquest (coedited with Lois Parkinson Zamora, Duke University Press, 2010). Her new study New Ecological Realisms: Post-Apocalyptic Fiction and Contemporary Theory is forthcoming from Edinburgh University Press.

At the heart of the dichotomy between modernism and realism is the question of form. Modernist writers linked the upheavals of modernity to a crisis of representation—a sense that the established forms of representing the world and of artistic expression were no longer adequate.
